Dharana is the sixth of the Eight Limbs of yoga and it means mental concentration. It is the first step towards meditation. The mind is focussed on an idea, an object, a chakra or a mantra. Most new students to yoga find it very difficult to quieten the everyday mind, so that they can practise dharana. It takes time, patience and perseverance. The benefits are enormous, though, so it it well worth the effort!
