Inner energy and the classical path

It’s launch day for my latest book! YOGA POSES QUESTIONS is now available from Amazon and I’m delivering the pre-ordered books to my classes today and tomorrow.
This week’s class is continuing the theme of working with the inner energies. We’ll begin with the complete yoga breath, mahat pranayama. Then, after stretches and warm-ups, we’ll work with the classical poses: shoulderstand, plough, fish, nose-to-knee and twist. Coming up through the boat, we’ll meet forward bend, backward bend, twist, before coming on to all fours for the cat and the dog. The dog has been our challenge pose for this half-term.
Meditation is about sitting in the heart and experiencing being embraced by the energy of love. Relaxation is the foot movement from Kaya Kriya.
Our classes recommence on September 15th for a 12 week term. I do hope you enjoy your summer reading! YOGA POSES QUESTIONS explores all the queries you may have had but in novel form. It’s a follow-on to HOME FROM OM, but stands happily alone. Enjoy some healthy reading!

Pranamaya Kosha

There are five sheaths or koshas. Over the last two weeks we have been focusing on Annamaya Kosha, the physical body. and now we’re moving on to Pranamaya Kosha, the energy sheath. This one joins with Annamaya Kosha to form the Gross or Dense Body, and is supported by the practice of pranayama.

We’re going to begin with the Complete Yoga Breath, Mahat Pranayama. Then we’ll sit for the practice of Kapalabhati. (This is the skull-shining breath. It clears the head and does a wonderful job of toning the abdomen!)

We’ll work with butterfly knees, rocking buddha, Merudandasana and the beautiful tortoise, and then we’ll rest while working with Ujjayi Pranayama.

On to the mermaid now, and then to the variation on the swan, Hamsasana, which is our challenge pose of this half-term.

We’ll use downward dog as a transition pose to standing and there we will practise the Tree of Life Breath done with Ujjayi Pranayama.

Let’s move on to Warrior 2, allowing it to lead us into Triangle. And now for a balance!

Back down to the mat through the squat and we’ll practise the Bee Breath, Bhramari.

For the meditation we’ll try Sama Vritti Pranayama, the square breath, remembering that it is Pranayama that supports the Pranamaya Kosha.

Relaxation will be Anu Loma Viloma Kriya, which works with the energy sheath.

The reading this week is an old Hindu Rhyme.

The Aura 7/3/2016

With my weekly students, I have been reviewing the Chakras. This week, we will look at the Aura, which is sometimes described as the Eighth Chakra.

Beginning with the Complete Yoga Breath, Mahat Pranayama, we will move into lying postures. We’ll work with ‘nose to knee pose’ (all forms), Apanasana. Then we’ll work with the ‘bridge’ (all forms) Sethu Bandhasana. On to lying twists (all forms).

We’ll use the ‘boat pose’ as a transition to seated, Navasana. Then continue our work with the ‘downward facing dog’, Svenasana. We’ll use the ‘dog’ as a transition to standing.

Working with a partner, we’ll learn how to ‘brush the aura’.

Cool-downs and meditation will be followed with a long relaxation where we breathe in and fill the energy centres, breathe out and fill the aura.
